  Eric Adams is the current mayor of New York City, having taken office on January 1, 2022. He is a former police officer, politician, and advocate for public safety and criminal justice reform. Born on September 1, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York, Adams began his career in law enforcement with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), where he served for over two decades, rising to the rank of captain.


Adams later transitioned into politics and was elected as a New York State Senator from 2007 to 2013. After serving in the state legislature, he was elected Brooklyn Borough President in 2013 and held that position until his mayoral run.


As mayor, Adams focuses on public safety, affordable housing, education, and economic recovery post-COVID-19. He advocates for law enforcement reform while supporting a strong police presence to address crime in the city. Before becoming mayor, Adams served as the 18th Borough President of Brooklyn from 2014 to 2021. He was also a member of the New York State Senate, representing the 20th district from 2007 to 2013.


Adams was born in New York City and has a long career in public service. He began as a police officer in the New York City Police Department (NYPD), where he served from 1984 to 2006, eventually rising to the rank of captain. After his police career, he transitioned into politics, first as a state senator and then as Brooklyn's borough president.


Adams is a member of the Democratic Party, though he was briefly affiliated with the Republican Party from 1997 to 2001. His domestic partner is Tracey Collins, and he has one child. He currently resides at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City's mayor.


Adams holds degrees from the New York City College of Technology (AA), John Jay College of Criminal Justice (BA), and Marist College (MPA).
